Nao has been raised in Silicon Valley, then taken back to Japan when her brilliant-with-computers father loses his job. The book tells the story of a lively teen-age Japanese girl, Nao (pronounced “now”) who keeps a diary addressed to an unknown person.
I checked out Ruth Ozeki’s novel and soon discovered that “time being” is a Buddhist term that includes me and you and all sentient beings. Pondering the implication that the story might exist for only a limited time, I decided to read it while I had the chance. I lifted the brightly striped paperback from the display shelf in the public library, wondering at the book’s odd title, A Tale for the Time Being.
